The management and Staff of FDR Pebbles recognize the importance of protecting and preserving the environment for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations. This environmental policy is a statement of our commitment, as we play our role in "Preserving the Environment for Tomorrow".

OBJECTIVES:

  1. To minimize the consumption of water by utilizing water-saving devices, in addition to using "gray water" and treated sewage water for irrigation purposes.
  2. To minimize the consumption of electricity through the use of energy-saving fluorescent bulbs and low-wattage incandescent bulbs.
  3. To ensure that safe environmental practices are observed in the purchasing procedures of the hotel, so that only environmentally-friendly products are urchased and used.
  4. To closely monitor the consumption of water, liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and electricity, by doing daily readings and analyses.
  5. To give full support to all known recycling programmes and to initiate in-house recycling programmes as well.
  6. To continually seek out new initiatives in resource conservation, and to be an advocate and industry leader in environmental protection.
  7. To give full cooperation to all statutory and regulatory environmental organizations, and comply fully with all environmental laws.
  8. To communicate the hotel's environmental policy to all hotel staff, guests and the wider community, and to ensure that all parties understand their role in the preservation of the environment.

The hotel, FDR Pebbles began operating in March 2000. The property was designed with a number of features to conserve energy and water. The guestrooms are also constructed from wood (Canadian cedar) and therefore the property has a very natural appearance. The property was designed to be in harmony with nature and will remain that way.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRACTICES:

  1. "Gray Water" from guestrooms (waste water from bathrooms) is used for irrigation of property. The water is first collected in cisterns under each building, then pumped out into irrigation hoses around the property.
  2. Rainwater from the roofs of the buildings is also channeled into these cisterns and used also for irrigation.
  3. Treated water from Sewage Plant is used for irrigation of lawn in the vicinity of the Sewage Plant.
  4. Broken tiles from hotel construction were used to tile the Staff canteen in an attractive mosaic-like pattern.
  5. Scrap lumber from hotel construction was utilized in making furniture such as beds for staff accommodations and benches for staff canteen.
  6. Used cooking oil from kitchen is given to a company which uses it as an ingredient in animal feed.
  7. Solar water heaters are used for water heating in addition to regular propane-fueled water heaters.
  8. P.E.T. bottles (plastic soda bottles) are sent to a company that does recycling (Recycle for Life). As part of this programme, points go toward a school adopted by the hotel. After accumulating a certain number of points the school can receive awards such as computers, books and so on.
Fluorescent bulbs are used in most areas of the hotel property. In the areas where fluorescent bulbs are not used, low wattage incandescent bulbs are utilized.
  9. All toilets on property are water-saving, only 1.6 gallons per flush. Low-flow shower heads are used in guestrooms as well, only 2.5 gallons per minute.
  10. All three restaurants at the hotel as well as the main bar, pool bar, conference room and gym/fitness center is open air. These areas were designed to make full use of natural ventilation and lighting, thus eliminating the need for air conditioning units and to reduce the need for artificial lighting.
  11. Daily readings are done on cooking gas, water and electricity, to closely monitor the consumption of these utilities.
  12. Recycled boxes are used in our administrative office, and in our Cyber Cafe (computer center), and "recycled" paper is utilized when printing and photocopying in-house correspondences.
  13. Cardboard boxes from packaging, tissue rolls and old sheets are utilized in the Kiddies' Center in various Arts & Crafts activities.
  14. Damaged and old sheets are used to make linen bags. Also, towels which are damaged are given extra life by being "tie and dyed", and used in other areas of the hotel operations.
  15. A Health, Safety and Environmental committee has been established at the hotel and this committee spearheads various environmental programmes to be implemented at the hotel.
  16. In November 2000, the Environmental Committee put on an "Environmental Workday", whereby items which would normally have been thrown away as garbage, were utilized in making various Arts and Crafts items. Some of these items are currently on display in the Environmental corner, located in the Kiddies' Center.
